What we are doing in English

In English, we have been learning about traditional tales. My Story or tale I chose was the story about Thor the god of thunder ( In Norse Mythology). One of the ways I decided to present my work was to make a model Out of clay of thors hammer (Mjölnir), I do not have any photos just yet as I am not finished my model.

Thor (In Old Norse Þórr) is the almighty God of thunder in Norse mythology, he is the son of Odin and Giantess Fjörgyn. Thor is associated with the day Thursday which comes from the word Torsdag in the Scandinavian countries and in the Germanic countries it is called Donnerstag which means thunder day and comes from the word Donar, which was the name of Thor in the Germanic countries. Thor’s hammer was forged by the dwarfs Brokkr and Eitri and it’s one of the most frightening weapon. When Thor is enraged, it makes loud noises with sparks and lightning. After the target is hit, Thor’s hammer will return to Thor’s right hand all by itself. I chose to do my story about Thor as I was recently watching the marvel movies with a character playing as Thor.

Reflection through lenses

Investigating Refraction Through Lenses

Aim: To investigate how different types of lenses refract light.

Equipment: Triple-slit ray slide, power supply, a concave lens and a convex lens.

Method:
1. Set up a ray box, triple-slit ray slide, and power supply, a concave lens and a convex lens.
2. Place the convex lens in the space below. Place the ray box at the top of the page and shine the three rays of light at the lens. Make sure the central light ray hits the lens at 90 as indicated in the diagram.
3. Carefully trace the direction of the incoming and refracted rays.
4. Repeat using the concave lens

Refraction

Aim: To investigate how light is affected by changing the substance it is travelling through

Equipment: Ray box, power source, glass or perspex block, single-slit ray slide.

Method: Collect the equipment from your teacher, and set them up to produce a single beam of light.

Observing Reflection in Curved Mirrors

Aim: To investigate the reflection of the light rays in concave and convex mirrors.

Equipment: Ray Box, Triple-slit ray slide and power supply.

Method

  1. set up your ray box, triple-slit ray slide and power supply.
  2. Place the mirrors on  your book as indicated below. Place the ray box at the top  of the page and shine the 3 rays of light at the mirror.
  3. Ensure that the middle ray light is hitting the mirror at a 90° angle.
  4. Carefully trace the direction of three incident rays and the three reflected rays.

Bouncing Light

Aim: To investigate how light behaves when it hits a plane (flat) mirror

 Method:

  1. Collect a ray box, power supply and single-slit ray slide from your teacher, and set them up to  produce a single beam of light.
  2. Place a plane mirror on the diagram of the protractor as described below.
  3. Vary the angle of incidence and record the angle of reflection in the results table.

Findings: The angle of incidence is the same as the angle of reflection.

Filter water

We are working on trying to filter dirty water. (insert photo)

The goal is to filter the water clean enough so I can drink it.
I am doing it so I can survive in the wilderness.

We used
>1  Natashna (Natasha)
>1 Grampa Boots (Me)
>1 Dora (Jordan)
> bottle
> paper towels
> 2 cups
> string
> cotton balls
> scraps of material

How did they change? They soaked up the good juicy dirt.
How well did your design work out?????????????????????????????? It worked brilliantly because we made it.
What went well? Mostly everything apart from the mess I made.
What didn't go well? The mess.
What items were helpful? The paper towels and balls.
